Why is it important to neuter my pet?
There are many reasons that we recommend neutering pets not intended for breeding and at Hanson’s we feel that it is very important to get the timing right for your pet. It is best to discuss this on an individual basis so please ask us at your next appointment and we will be able to advise you accordingly.
Neutering is the term given to the surgical sterilization of your pet to ensure that they cannot reproduce and have unwanted litters.
What is involved?
- Castration is the term used for the procedure to remove the testicles of a male animal.
- Spaying is the term used for the procedure to remove the uterus and ovaries of a female animal.
- Both of these procedures involve a general anaesthetic at our surgery and are permanent.
However if you prefer to avoid surgery, there is now also an option to insert a chemical implant under the skin in male dogs while your pet is conscious and that acts as a temporary form of castration. This would need to be repeated every 6 months to obtain the more permanent benefits of castration.
Benefits of Neutering
Male Cats
- Neutering can reduce the tendency to spray urine.
- It can reduce aggressive behaviour towards other males and the risk of viral transfer.
- It decreases the urge to roam and in turn the likelihood of getting lost, in fights or run over.
Female Cats
- Neutering eliminates the risk of pregnancies and associated birth problems.
- It stops the “heat” cycle so they won’t have sounds and signs of heat eg. howling, posturing etc. and trying to get out to find a mate.
- It decreases the possibility of disease in the reproductive system.
Male Dogs
- Neutering eliminates the risk of testicular tumours, and reduces the risk of developing prostate gland problems and aggressive tumours around the anus.
- Can reduce the urge to roam and be aggressive to other dogs and other antisocial behaviours.
Female Dogs
- Neutering eliminates the risk of unwanted pregnancy and associated birth problems.
- Eliminates the risk of infection in the uterus that increases with each heat cycle encountered.
- Reduces the risk of mammary neoplasia (breast cancers) which also increases with each heat cycle.
